Need Help Finding a Retirement Gift?

Got a friend, co-worker, boss, or subordinate about to retire? Picking a gift can be problematic.

Here are some ideas.

The very best way to pick a gift for someone who is retiring is to know their hobbies or interests. If you can get them to reveal a passion, then that is a key to finding a special gift.

Do they like sports? The list is extensive including golf, tennis, sailing, archery, kayaking, baseball, basketball, football, soccer, snowmobiling, skateboarding, skiing, surfing, running, swimming, parachuting, car racing, horse racing, etc.

Maybe they have a hobby such as model railroading, model aircraft, model cars, vintage records, vintage guitars, Civil War reenacting, coin collecting, stamp collecting, gardening, woodworking, knitting, furniture restoration, antique car restoration, sewing, astronomy, or music.

If you can incorporate something they have done or collected into a gift, it makes it a unique item. For example, if the person is a photographer, then have some of their pictures matted and mounted. If you cannot get access to the photographs, then get them a gift certificate at a local shop that does matting and framing. It is not just photographs that get mounted and framed these days. If the person likes to travel, or to travel to a particular place, get them a beautiful map mounted and framed. If they like movies, you can order movie posters online and have those matted, mounted, and framed for a fantastic gift. I have even seen guitars mounted in a large display case and given as a gift. This would not be my choice as I think guitars are for playing, but if the guitar was a signed one-of-a-kind, then a display case makes sense.

Sports fans would appreciate a ticket to their favorites team's next game.

Inexpensive gifts can include sweatshirts, teeshirts, caps, polo shirts, coffee mugs and other items with cute sayings or images related to their interests.

How about a dinner and a movie? Or a concert or museum? Most of these places offer gift certificates.

If the support a certain charity, make a gift contribution in their name and give a nice card or plaque documenting it.

But they don't do anything you say! Well, in that case, help them develop one of these sports or activities. Strike up a conversation and listen to what they talk about. Suppose their interest is politics, history, mathematics, or philosophy.

Or if your budget doesn't support buying a sailor a new sailboat, then get them a book about famous sailors, or historic voyages, or sailing techniques such as navigation. Yes, if they like to read, the sky is the limit. There are books on all these sports, hobbies, subjects, and topics.
